Why Your Skin Feels Like the Sahara in Winter (And What to Do About It!)

If winter has you feeling like you’re shedding more skin than a snake, welcome to the club! Every year, as soon as temperatures drop, my hands turn into what I can only describe as dry, flaky parchment paper. No matter how much lotion, hand serum, or prayers I slather on, they still look like they’ve been through a sandstorm. And don’t even get me started on the rest of my skin—it’s like my entire body forgets what moisture is! If you’re dealing with the same struggle, you’re in the right place.

Let’s break down the top three reasons why your skin becomes a winter desert, the biggest mistakes we’re all guilty of making, and three hydration habits that will actually keep your skin soft and happy. Oh, and there’s a little science in here too—because I know you love receipts.

The Top 3 Reasons Your Skin Gets Dry in Winter

1. Cold Air & Low Humidity: Your Skin’s Worst Enemy

Winter air is a thief. No, seriously—it steals moisture right from your skin! Cold air holds less humidity, and the drier the air, the more it pulls moisture from your skin. This leaves your protective skin barrier compromised, making it harder for your skin to retain hydration.

A study published in PubMed shows that winter-related changes in humidity significantly impact skin hydration levels, reducing water content in the outermost layer of the skin (epidermis). You can check out the study here if you’re into nerding out over skin science!

2. Indoor Heating: The Silent Dehydrator

While we love the cozy warmth of indoor heating, our skin? Not so much. Central heating systems suck moisture out of the air, which means they also suck it out of your skin. The result? Tight, itchy, and dehydrated skin that feels like it’s begging for relief. If you wake up feeling extra dry, it’s probably your heater working against you while you sleep.

3. Hot Showers & Harsh Soaps: The Double Trouble Combo

Nothing feels better than stepping into a steamy shower on a cold day, right? Well, your skin disagrees. Hot water strips the natural oils that keep your skin soft and supple. Add in a drying soap or body wash, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for flaky, irritated skin.

Trust me—I’ve been there. I used to think that the more lather and bubbles, the cleaner (and better) my skin would be. Turns out, I was just making my dryness worse!

Common Mistakes & Misconceptions About Winter Skincare

Using the Same Skincare Routine Year-Round

What works for your skin in the summer won’t cut it in the winter. Your skin needs more moisture, not the same lightweight products you use in July. Time to swap out your routine like you do your wardrobe!

Thinking More Product = More Hydration

Slapping on layers of lotion without prepping your skin first? Guilty. Hydration is about locking in moisture, not just applying more of it. If you’re not using hydrating ingredients or sealing in moisture, you’re just wasting product.

Skipping Sunscreen Because “It’s Not Sunny”

Winter sun damage is real! The sun’s UV rays still penetrate through clouds, and snow actually reflects UV light, increasing exposure. Dry skin is more vulnerable to damage, so don’t ditch your SPF just because it’s cold out!

3 Key Habits for Better Winter Skin Hydration

1. Hydrate Inside & Out

Drinking water is great (and necessary!), but don’t forget about external hydration too. Use a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid before your moisturizer to pull water into your skin. Bonus points if you run a humidifier in your bedroom while you sleep!

2. Switch to a Thicker Moisturizer & Seal It In

Lightweight lotions won’t cut it. Opt for richer creams with ingredients like ceramides, shea butter, and squalane. And if your skin is extra dry, layer an oil (like jojoba or rosehip) over your moisturizer to lock it all in!

3. Be Kind to Your Skin in the Shower

Keep showers lukewarm and limit them to 10-15 minutes. Swap out drying soaps for creamy, fragrance-free body washes, and apply your moisturizer immediately after patting (not rubbing!) your skin dry.

My Personal Winter Skincare Woes & What Finally Helped

For years, I struggled with painfully dry hands every winter. No matter how much lotion I applied, my skin felt like sandpaper by midday. My breakthrough? Layering hydration. Instead of just slapping on lotion, I started applying a hydrating hand serum first (hello, hyaluronic acid!), then sealing it with a thick hand cream. I also started wearing gloves outside (because wind is another moisture thief) and keeping a mini humidifier on my desk. Game. Changer.

If you’re battling the same issue, try layering your products, keeping a hand cream in your bag, and wearing gloves whenever you’re out in the cold.

✅ Check your skincare products—are they winter-friendly? ✅ Start layering hydration instead of just slathering on lotion. ✅ Swap one habit (like hot showers or skipping sunscreen) for a skin-loving alternative.
